Caregivers of those with early-stage dementia often need support managing their own time and taking care of their own needs. Respite Care, which offers day programs for their loved ones, helps to create balance in the lives of caregivers which, in turn, supports the wellbeing of those being cared for.
COA operates four Respite Care centers throughout the county, engaging those with early-stage dementia in vibrant activities. Art, music, writing, story-telling, and other creative activities help to promote health and wellbeing by encouraging clients age 60 and older to both express themselves and experience joy. Meanwhile, caregivers are given the opportunity to participate in Respite Care support groups that provide tools for alleviating stress, interacting effectively with those they are caring for (most often family members), and handling various challenges.
